Load-Shedding Has Eased. Is Solar Still Worth It in Zambia?

ZESCO says nationwide load-shedding isn't coming back. Here's how to decide whether a solar or backup system still makes sense for your home or business.

For two years, solar in Zambia was an easy sell. When the lights were off for most of the day, nobody needed a spreadsheet to justify an inverter. Now the picture has changed. In June, ZESCO's managing director said supply is stable and that the country is not expected to return to nationwide load management, crediting new generation from hydro, thermal and solar, and power bought from independent producers.

So if you held off during the crisis, or you're wondering whether the system you were quoting last year still makes sense, here's an honest way to decide.

A stable grid is not the same as no outages

Even without scheduled load-shedding, many homes and businesses still see power cuts from faults, storms, transformer problems and planned maintenance. For a shop with a card machine, an office with a server, a clinic with a vaccine fridge or a lodge with guests, a few hours without power is still lost money.

Ask yourself one question: what does an hour without power cost you? If the answer is "nothing much", you may not need a large system. If it's lost sales, spoiled stock or an angry client, backup power is insurance, not a luxury.

Three reasons solar can still pay off

  • Backup you control. A hybrid inverter with batteries switches over automatically when ZESCO drops, so the fridge, lights, Wi-Fi and till keep running.
  • Lower monthly bills. Panels supply power during the day, cutting how many units you buy. Businesses that operate mostly in daylight hours benefit the most.
  • Protection against the next dry season. Zambia's power still leans heavily on hydro. Buying while demand is calm gives you time to compare quotes and size the system properly, instead of rushing in the middle of the next shortage.

When solar might not be worth it yet

Be wary of anyone who says solar is right for everyone. It may not be the best use of your money if:

  • You rent and expect to move within a year (unless the system can come with you).
  • Your outages are rare and short, and nothing critical depends on power.
  • Your biggest loads are things like electric geysers, stoves or air conditioners running all day - these need a much larger, more expensive system. A gas stove or solar geyser is often the cheaper fix.

Size it properly so you don't overpay

A common mistake is buying a system based on a neighbour's setup instead of your own needs. Sizing comes down to two numbers:

  1. Peak load - everything you want running at the same moment. This sets the inverter size (for example 3kVA, 5kVA, 10kVA or 15kVA).
  2. Daily energy use - how long those things run during an outage. This sets the battery bank.

A typical home keeping lights, a fridge, TV and Wi-Fi going is often well served by a 3kVA to 5kVA system. Pumps, office equipment or small commercial premises push you towards 10kVA and above. You can get a quick estimate with the savings calculator on our Solar page.

Tip: separate your "essential" circuit from the rest of the house. Keeping only essentials on backup can halve the battery size you need, and the price with it.

Questions to ask any installer

  • Is the quote fixed-price, and does it include mounting, cabling, isolators and labour?
  • What are the inverter and battery warranties, and who honours them in Zambia?
  • Lithium or lead-acid batteries, and why for my usage?
  • Will you show me how to monitor the system and what to do if it trips?

How Rayema Enterprise can help

We supply and install complete systems from 3kVA to 15kVA, plus LED lighting upgrades that reduce your load before you buy a single panel. It starts with a free load assessment: tell us what you need to keep running, or book a site visit, and we'll recommend the right size with a transparent fixed-price quote. Installations typically take one to three days.
